Humans. What are humans?
Are we an extremely intelligent species that has a very rational and logical mind? A species that has the ability to observe not only the world around us but the Universe beyond our Earth. We have created the technology to have the ability to see so far into space. A space that our ancestors used to look up into from the weaker lenses of eyes and theorize about what was out there. They would create religions trying to explain certain features of the world, of space, of nature. I recall hearing or reading somewhere the quite “You are the universe becoming aware of itself.” This quote really got me reflecting. It made me start to think about how big the universe is. How small we are; and how much smaller there is than us. A video i really enjoy and recommend everyone watch is called “The Powers of Ten.” The video goes through a scale of the universe by factors of ten. It starts with us, then starts viewing the universe through a smaller and smaller scale. It scales down to cells, smaller into molecule, smaller into elements, smaller into atoms and even smaller. You appreciate how much there is to every living thing. How much trial and error, and evolution the world has gone through to achieve its current state. Then the video scales back to the normal human frame. Then out higher and bigger. It scales out until you see the outline of the city, then the state, then the country, then the continent, then the world, then the galaxy, all the way to the farthest speculative image we have of what our universe looks like. It just an overall extremely thought provoking video.
Or are we as Agent Smith from the Matrix would consider us “I’d like to share a revelation that I’ve had during my time here. It came to me when I tried to classify your species and I realized that you’re not actually mammals. Every mammal on this planet instinctively develops a natural equilibrium with the surrounding environment but you humans do not. You move to an area and you multiply and multiply until every natural resource is consumed and the only way you can survive is to spread to another area. There is another organism on this planet that follows the same pattern. Do you know what it is? A virus. Human beings are a disease, a cancer of this planet. You’re a plague and we are the cure. ” Maybe this quote is a little extreme, but some seem to see this as true. Human population has been growing and expanding at a very quick rate these past couple centuries compared to the distant past. How can we live in peace and equilibrium with our environment but continue to grow? We have a huge impact on our immediate surroundings, our environment. It will be interesting to see how we deal with the issue of carrying capacity and others in the future. Our population may grow too large for our environment and it may push technology even farther to account for this problem. It will be interesting to see what the future holds and what mankind comes up with to deal with that future.
I’m just gonna throw this quote i really like by my boy Al in here.
“A human being is part of the whole called by us universe, a part limited in time and space. We experience ourselves, our thoughts and feelings as something separate from the rest. A kind of optical delusion of consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from the prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty. The true value of a human being is determined by the measure and the sense in which they have obtained liberation from the self. We shall require a substantially new manner of thinking if humanity is to survive.”
~ Albert Einstein, 1954.
